IN THE DISTRICT
The Hilton Head Council of Garden Clubs has as its new project this year, the renovation of the xeriscaped garden located next to the Town Hall of Hilton Head off highway 278.
Established in the 1980's, the garden did not receive appropriate maintenance and has since lost many of its original specimens.
After an overview of the site with a Town Hall representative, a proposal was submitted to the mayor and town manager, and with the Town Council's approval, we were ready to proceed.
Five zones were established and soil samples taken from each zone. These samples were given to Laura Lee Rose, Clemson extension agent for analysis. Upon receipt of the results amendments will be considered.
Master gardeners, experienced gardeners, and master gardener interns were recruited to help. Teams of volunteers are being set up under a team leader and a work schedule is being designed. Work officially begins the week of October 31through November 4. cleaning up, and amending, planning for bare areas, selecting plants, pruning etc. will be our goals.
Signage will be another consideration. The Council would like to add a sign for the xeriscape garden since there is not one now. Additionally, the signs for the plant, shrub, and tree specimens need to be replaced.
