“Nurturing Birds Through: Conservation, Education and Protection”
The Coastal District is one of seven geographic districts within the Garden Club of South Carolina, Inc. Currently there are 3 councils and 22 Federated clubs in the Coastal District. The District includes all or portions of Horry, Marion, Dillon, Florence, Georgetown, Williamsburg and Berkeley Counties. There is one District Meeting in March each year. This meeting is hosted by a club, group of clubs or council on a rotational basis. The rotation for 2018 is North Myrtle Beach.
New members and friends are welcome to visit and join our garden clubs.
Director, Allyson McCoy Hirsh
After two interesting and exciting years as Co-Director of the Coastal District, Allyson Hirsh is honored to serve as Coastal District Director of the Garden Club of South Carolina. Allyson is married to Tony Hirsh, an active gardener. Her love for nature and gardening began while spending summers at her Grandparents South Carolina farm. She attended garden club meetings and worked in the flower gardens with her Grandmother. Her Mother is currently a member of the Myrtle Beach Garden Club. Allyson served as Historian and is now President of the Myrtle Beach Garden Club which has 50 members and is celebrating 70 years as a federated garden club in 2017. She graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a B.S. in Business Administration. Completed the Clemson Master Gardener program and holds an Interior Design Certificate from Hunter College. Allyson volunteers with the Flower Committee and Prayer Shawl Ministry at First United Methodist Church and serves on the Horry- Georgetown Technical College Foundation Board.
Susan Rogers Carter is a member of the Latta Dogwood Garden Club and currently serves as their president. She grew up and continues to live on a Dillon County farm which has been in her family for five generations. Although she is new to the South Carolina Garden Club, she has always had a love of flowers and plants and is happiest when “puttering around in the dirt.”
Susan is a graduate of Francis Marion University with a BS in sociology. She is a retired SC state employee, having worked in social services and public administration with the SC Department of Social Services and with the SC Department of Health and Human Services. Since her retirement, Susan runs an eBay store, where she will sell anything she thinks someone may buy. She is an American Legion Auxiliary member and a member of Latta Baptist Church, where she serves as a Sunday School teacher and is a member of the hand bell choir.
Susan’s family includes her husband Ralph Carter, who works as a transportation manager, their son Brenton and daughter-in-law Laura, who are both attorneys, and their daughter Lily, who is a rising senior at Winthrop University. Susan and Ralph are also the proud grandparents of Ellie, age 3 and Brenton, Jr., age 21 months.
